Below is a lesson plan I created using Instructional Software. It uses two types of software, including a tutorial and an educational game. ------------------- Lesson Topic: Finding the Length of a Side of a Right Triangle Using the Pythagorean Theorem
Goals for the Lesson: After learning what the Pythagorean Theorem is and how to use it, students will be able to use this theorem to accurately find the length of the missing side of a right triangle at least 80% of the time.
Materials: - Teacher notes to introduce the topic. A blank copy will be shared with students via email, which they can use to take notes. Copies of these documents are included at the bottom of the page. - Student iPads, including student email addresses and the Notability app (my school has a 1:1 iPad program). Students will use their iPads to take notes and also to complete the activities involving instructional software. - Khan Academy Pythagorean Theorem tutorial. This website contains a video going over the concept, and also contains practice problems with feedback. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry/right_triangles_topic/pyth_theor/v/pythagorean-theorem - Pythagorean Theorem Game. http://www.math-play.com/Pythagorean-Theorem-Game.html - Worksheet to be used as assessment. A copy of this document is included at the bottom of the page as well.
Learning Activities:
First, the teacher must email out the blank notes to the students. This email should also contain links to the tutorial and the game that will be used later in the lesson. Before the lesson begins, students will open the notes on their iPads and during the lesson, they will fill them in using the Notability app.
After the students have the notes ready on their iPads, the teacher will introduce the students to the Pythagorean Theorem using the notes. The teacher will fill in the notes on the SmartBoard using the completed notes document as a guide, and the students will follow along and fill in the notes on their iPads.
After the teacher is done giving the notes, students will reinforce the concept of the Pythagorean Theorem using the Khan Academy tutorial mentioned above. They will access this tutorial on their iPads, using a link emailed out by the teacher. This tutorial contains a video of the process of how to use the Pythagorean Theorem, and also contains practice questions with feedback. This way, students will know if they have completed the problems correctly. If so, they can feel confident in their abilities to solve these problems. If not, there are more videos in the series to help students understand the concept and see where they were going wrong.
After the tutorial, students will have another chance to deepen their understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem with a short game, which was mentioned above. The students will access this game on their iPads, using a link emailed out by the teacher.
If there is class time left over, students may work on the worksheet homework assignment.
Assessment: Students’ knowledge of the Pythagorean Theorem will be assessed using the worksheet mentioned above. Ideally, all students will get 80% or more of the questions right so that the lesson goal will be achieved.
